The velocity distribution of nearby stars from Hipparcos data I. The significance of the moving groups

چکیده
We present a three-dimensional reconstruction of the velocity distribution of nearby stars (. 100 pc) using a maximum likelihood density estimation technique applied to the two-dimensional tangential velocities of stars. The underlying distribution is modeled as a mixture of Gaussian components. The algorithm reconstructs the error-deconvolved distribution function, even when the individual stars have unique error and missing-data properties. We apply this technique to the tangential velocity measurements from a kinematically unbiased sample of 11,865 main sequence stars observed by the Hipparcos satellite. We explore various methods for validating the complexity of the resulting velocity distribution function, including criteria based on Bayesian model selection and how accurately our reconstruction predicts the radial velocities of a sample of stars from the Geneva-Copenhagen survey (GCS). Using this very conservative external validation test based on the GCS, we find that there is little evidence for structure in the distribution function beyond the moving groups established prior to the Hipparcos mission. This is in sharp contrast with internal tests performed here and in previous analyses, which point consistently to maximal structure in the velocity distribution. We quantify the information content of the radial velocity measurements and find that the mean amount of new information gained from a radial velocity measurement of a single star is significant. This argues for complementary radial velocity surveys to upcoming astrometric surveys. 1 Center for Cosmology and Particle Physics, Department of Physics, New York University, 4 Washington Place, New York, NY 10003 2 To whom correspondence should be addressed: [email protected] 3 Max-Planck-Institut für Astronomie, Königstuhl 17, D-69117 Heidelberg, Germany 4 Department of Computer Science, University of Toronto, 6 King’s College Road, Toronto, Ontario, M5S 3G4 Canada 5 Google Inc., Mountain View, CA

The Distribution of Nearby Stars in Velocity Space
From the tangential velocities of stars all over the sky, one can, in a statistical way, infer their 3D velocity distribution. An application to Hipparcos data reveals rich structure in the planar stellar motions: there are several moving groups, increasing in number with stellar type but decreasing in importance. A distinct group of outward moving stars with low rotation velocities might be as...
متن کاملThe Distribution of Nearby Stars in Velocity Space Inferred from Hipparcos Data
The velocity distribution f(v) of nearby stars is estimated, via a maximum-likelihood algorithm, from the positions and tangential velocities of a kinematically unbiased sample of 14 369 stars observed by the HIPPARCOS satellite. f shows rich structure in the radial and azimuthal motions, vR and vφ, but not in the vertical velocity, vz: there are four prominent and many smaller maxima, many of ...
متن کاملThe distribution of nearby stars in phase space mapped by Hipparcos ⋆ I . The potential well and local dynamical mass
Hipparcos data provide the first, volume limited and absolute magnitude limited homogeneous tracer of stellar density and velocity distributions in the solar neighbourhood. The density of A-type stars more luminous than M v = 2.5 can be accurately mapped within a sphere of 125 pc radius, while proper motions in galactic latitude provide the vertical velocity distribution near the galactic plane...
متن کاملThe Geneva - Copenhagen survey of the Solar neighbourhood ⋆ Ages , metallicities , and kinematic properties of ∼ 14 , 000 F and G dwarfs
We present and discuss new determinations of metallicity, rotation, age, kinematics, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, and kinematically unbiased sample of 16,682 nearby F and G dwarf stars. Our ∼63,000 new, accurate radial-velocity observations for nearly 13,500 stars allow identification of most of the binary stars in the sample and, together with published uvbyβ photomet...
متن کاملAbsolute Proper Motions of Open Clusters . I . Observational data
Mean proper motions and parallaxes of 205 open clusters were determined from their member stars found in the Hipparcos Catalogue. 360 clusters were searched for possible members, excluding nearby clusters with distances D < 200 pc. Members were selected using ground based information (photometry, radial velocity, proper motion, distance from the cluster centre) and information provided by Hippa...
